During his childhood
and throughout his high school years, Tom McNeil enjoyed working with
wood. After high school, as a means to supplement his income in
agriculture, Tom started creating custom furniture. It was soon after,
that Tom decided to devote all of his time and energy to woodworking.
While doing this, Tom became known for his interpretation of the classic
Rolltop Desk.
After moving his shop
from a farm in the country to downtown Preston, Iowa, Tom received
several orders for Rolltop Desks from Japan. In 1991, the first shipment
of these handcrafted pieces of Americana arrived in Tokyo, with Tom there
to personally inspect each one as it was unloaded. It is this attention
to detail and concern for customer satisfaction that has given T.M.
Woodworks its reputation for quality and service.
T.M. Woodworks has
expanded to a larger production facility on the outskirts of town. This
has allowed for greater effieciency in the production process without
losing the attention to detail that Tom expects from everyone he employs.
Many of the top craftsmen in the production facility were trained and
hand selected by Tom himself. This process is made easy because of Tom's
involvement at Preston High School, where he teaches furniture and wood
design classes.
In the winter of
2000, T.M. Woodworks annnounced the creation of Carson Cabinets in
response to the growing demands by clients to design and build custom
cabinetry for their homes. The goals for Carson Cabinets are the same
that have made T.M. Woodworks known for its quality: unwavering attention
to detail and their philosophy towards customer satisfaction. The main
goal is complete customer satisfaction.
